Scaling &
Root Planing
More frequent professional cleanings are usually enough to combat gum disease in its earliest stages as long as you improve your oral hygiene routine at home. For more advanced cases, scaling and root planing are usually required instead. Scaling systematically removes plaque and tartar from the gums and tooth roots while root planing removes the rough surfaces where bacteria like to attach themselves. Once the process is complete, we can discuss what kind of follow-up appointments might be needed.
Arestin® Antibiotic Therapy
Suffering from gum disease means that the level of harmful bacteria in your mouth has grown out of control. There’s likely to still be some left over even after scaling and root planing, which is why we typically follow up by prescribing Arestin antibiotic therapy. The microspheres are placed in the pockets and slowly release the medication they contain so that it can continue to fight the bacteria that’s hiding in the deeper areas of your mouth.
Gingival Inflammation Therapy
Gingivitis is only the first stage of gum disease, and unlike the more advanced stages, it’s still reversible. In order to treat it, we’ll need to reduce the inflammation that has already occurred as a result of the infection. Gingival inflammation can be reduced in a number of ways; in addition to providing you with professional treatment, we can give you tips of things you can do at home, such as improving your nutrition or using a special kind of toothpaste.
